As the logistics team executes their “prioritization” plan, they leverage their International Transportation Management System (ITMS) program's control tower team to provide real-time visibility and control. The team works closely with providers to ensure that the hottest containers are moved first, and delivery is executed efficiently.

To adapt to changing circumstances, the team consider is considering alternative strategies. For example, cross-docking had emerged as a creative solution, allowing containers to skip going direct to a Distribution Center (DC). Instead, they send the shipment to a cross-dock provider to be unloaded, labeled, palletized, and shipped directly to customers. This change of destination can be handled without the support of customs brokers or ocean carriers. They usually are already out of the picture.

The team also works closely with the transportation providers to ensure that the containers were moved efficiently and effectively. This includes selecting the most suitable transportation modes, such as truck or rail, and optimizing the routes to reduce transit times.

The ITMS program's control tower team continued to monitor the shipments as they move closer to the final destination. They provide insights to inform decision-making. This enables the team to respond quickly to changes in the supply chain and ensure that customer demand was met.

Benefits of an ITMS Program:

  • Improved agility: Respond quickly to changes.
  • Increased efficiency: Optimize transportation modes and routes.
  • Enhanced customer satisfaction: Meet demand and deliver on time.

Key Takeaways:

  • Flexibility is key: Be prepared to adapt to changing circumstances with alternative strategies.
  • Real-time visibility: Use technology to track and anticipate delays.
  • Effective communication: Keep all stakeholders informed and aligned on the plan and any changes.

That first year of Covid, by prioritizing containers effectively and executing the plan with the partner providers and inside stakeholders, my team was able to ensure business continued to operate as smoothly as possible despite the challenges of congested ports and overwhelming volumes. The ITMS program with its control tower and the business intelligence platform played a critical role in enabling us to respond quickly to changes and meet customer demand.

We would have and could have managed the inbound without an ITMS but, not nearly as well!
