You can't know everything in logistics. But you can know a lot of people who, together, know just about everything!
That philosophy has served me well throughout my 40-plus years in global logistics.
I'm excited to return to Norfolk for VMA26, October 13–15, alongside my WOWL team. I enjoyed VMA25 last year and look forward to another great event.
Plus, WOWL is a sponsor. Nice!
I've always believed in industry conferences. Great speakers, strong panels, fresh ideas, and honest discussions about what's working—and what's not.
But the greatest value has always been the people.
Old colleagues, longtime friends, industry experts, and new faces. They've been my pathfinders, problem solvers, and knowledge bank throughout my career.
TPM Is the Big Show. But Don't Overlook Regional Conferences!
JOC's annual TPM conference in Long Beach remains my gold standard for global container shipping. Thousands attend, nearly every major industry player is represented, and the topics cover practically everything.
It's also expensive, crowded, and sometimes overwhelming. Still worth attending!
Regional conferences offer another great value.
Events like VMA26, JOC's Chicago conference, and maritime conferences in South Carolina, Georgia, and New York/New Jersey attract hundreds rather than thousands.
Excellent speakers, focused panels, practical discussions, and more opportunities for meaningful conversations. Closer to home for many of us, easier on budgets, and requiring fewer days away.
And I regularly reconnect with many of the same people I meet at TPM!
Conferences Are Investments, Not Just Expenses
The real return isn't measured by presentations attended or business cards collected.
It's what you learn, whom you meet, and the relationships you build.
Sometimes the biggest payoff comes years later when an old contact helps solve a problem or opens a door.
VMA26 offers two full days of learning, sharing, fellowship, and fresh ideas.
Technology and AI are changing logistics rapidly. At WOWL, we're embracing that progress. But technology doesn't replace experience, trust, or knowing whom to call.
My advice, especially to younger logistics professionals? Get out there! Listen, ask questions, share knowledge, and build your network.
I'll be at VMA26 with the WOWL team. Let's connect!
None of us knows it all. But together, we can come pretty close!
